#YSDAFTakover: 5 Questions with Mey Kamal

In the next 2 weeks, we’ve got something really special lined up on our official Instagram account @ysadartsfest.

Celebrating arts and creativity, two incredibly talented human beings will be a part of #YSDAFTakeover! At each week, a featured artist will be sharing with us their artwork/photography and what their work means to them. It could range from inspirations and ideas, to words of wisdom and random observations.

First up, get to know our first artist on the line-up:

Mey Kamal (Mohammad Haszmeer Bin Ahmad Kamal)

1

Currently pursuing a Masters in Architecture in Malaysia, Mey’s artwork is focused on sketches, which is the most significant process before creating any piece of art. To him, sketching is a focal medium of art that has its own intrinsic value. Enthusiastically involved in wall-art as well, Mey has a few works in Ipoh, namely Eroll Barbershop, Matperiuk Jr. Cafe and O’ Oi Comrades Barber and Cafe.

Here’s 5 cool things to know about Mey Kamal:

If you could meet one artist dead or alive, who would it be and what would you ask him/her?

Mey: It would definitely be Cliff Mills. All of Cliff’s illustrations are drawn with only pen and ink. For him, nothing can replace the feeling of a nib scraping on paper, and it’s a feeling a definitely relate to as well. My question for him? “Where do you feel art is going?”

Where do you go to in Kuala Lumpur for inspiration?

Taking a stroll at klpac, Central Market (Pasar Seni), Publika and Balai Seni Lukis Negara is enough to rejuvenate my ideas and creativity!

What sparked your love for art?

First thing that really sparked my interest was my father’s drawings during my childhood. I couldn’t really do exactly what my father did at that time, but I fell in love with the style or strokes of his drawing.

As I grew up, I discovered more architectural styles of strokes from various architects and artists and now, I’m starting to make them my references. Till today, I’m still inspired by those styles and I’m currently interested in artworks and illustrations that are heavily influenced by comic books and Pop Art.

Describe your great ambition.

To get opportunities to exhibit my works internationally. I also hope that through my work, people can see art as a way of expressing beauty, emotions and feelings from the past, present and future.

Describe your artistic style in 3 words.

Architectural sketching style!
